I'm at a loss...

It just gets better and better. Not only do we have to see a social worker before doing IVF at our clinic, we have to pay $200 for the privilege! That is so completely fucked up. I do not want to see a social worker, I do not need to see a social worker, I'm anticipating that it will be a complete waste of time, and now I have to pay for it????

Honestly, it's (among other things...) making me seriously consider changing clinics. What's holding me back is my impression that it will add even further to the amount of time we have to wait, because I've heard that they will want to redo all the testing. Have you switched clinics? Is it true that they will want their own CD3 blood tests etc. etc.?

I don't know about IVF, but my new doctor (whom I love!) wants to redo my day three tests (done at another clinic) before she will even prescribe metformin or set us up for an injectables cycle. In our case it is because I am right on the edge with a few of my numbers, though--so a new clinic for you may not need to redo the tests. Could you call a few places and ask?
I am indignant for you re: the social worker.

Ok, bear with me, but why do you have to see a social worker? Sorry you have to jump through even more hoops.

So sorry this is turning out to be such an administrative and cost nightmare. The whole social worker thing is such an insult - here they make us get a letter from our GPs that we're safe to raise children, and at least that doesnt' got anything, but heavens it feels so invasive.

Grrrr!! That just makes me so mad. It's like, you can never get a break. So unjust.

I'm sorry but I don't have any advice for you. But I'm hating those people right along with you.

Stephanie - one of the requirements of my clinic before you can go to 'committee' to get your cycle plan figured out is that you have to have an appointment with a social worker. I'm not 100% clear on the reasoning, something about wanting to make sure that you're managing all the stress etc. I don't think it's about making sure we're fit to be parents, although I could be wrong. I just don't feel like I need it (I have a pretty good support system, with y'all, my mom and sis, a very good friend who went through IVF recently). And to make me pay for something I feel is unnecessary really irks me.

I'm having lunch next week with a coworker who has two daughters through IVF at this same clinic, so I'll get her take on it all.

Wow, I agree with Thalia, that is an insult. As for managing the stress, you've made it this far! If you weren't handling it well then you would've cracked by now.
Kudos to you! Hopefully your co-worker will have some insightful news about the whole process.

Yeah - we have to go through the same spiel before we have our Donor Egg IVF. They explained that it was more to make sure that we were handling the stress of this, and not, ya know, about to go on a homicidal shooting spree. *hugs* It's frustrating.

When I changed clinics, I did have to redo some of the tests. I didn't particularly mind redoing the day 3 test (because it had been a while) but redoing all the infectious disease screening for both of us pissed me off. It had been more than six months but less than a year since the last screening. Do these people not realize that infertility makes you not want to have regular sex with your own husband? Do they really think I had the energy to have an affair?

The social worker bit bites, but if you're in MA, I thought the state mandated coverage of infertility treatments. Why are having to pay?

That sucks! I've seen three REs and none of them mentioned redoing tests from any of the others.

wow..that is crappy! I haven't been to our new IVF dr. yet, but i didn't see anything anywhere about a social worker. Lord, I hope they don't spring that one on us too! I agree with the others, i am indignant with you!

I've now seen two REs - the first was a complete waste of my time and he merely wanted to rerun every test under the sun in order to rack up more fees for his office. My current RE however said that he wanted us to only redo tests if it is absolutely necessary.

My thoughts - have lunch with the fellow clinic goer, see what her thoughts are - and then weigh what options are best for you.

And yes, I would be a little put off by the social worker aspect of it as well.

It's the irony of life. People who are really want kids have to pay through the nose yet people who should never be allowed to breed do so with no problem and get handouts etc.
I am fuming because I have to pay £25 for a fitness to fly certificate!

I agree that the whole social worker bit sucks, BUT if the clinic that you're with now has a great rep and a promising record (I don't know if it does), I'd be inclined to stay. I guess your friend will be able to offer some insights about the practice. Anyway, results. To me that's the #1 criteria. And if both clinics seem about the same on that front, then I guess you have to go with the lesser of two evils. Social worker or retesting (if, in fact, you would need to). And, so, basically, I've restated your original question. Guess I'm no help at all!
